Edexcel International A Level in Information Technology (XIT11+YIT11)

Why take Information Technology (IT) at A Levels?

At A Levels, students who wish to pursue a technology-related subject may opt for either Computer Science (CS) or Information Technology (IT).

Those who choose to prepare for Cambridge exams take up Computer Science as their first choice at A Levels, as this is more relevant to students intending to pursue a career in engineering. As for the Edexcel students, they don't have Computing or Computer Science anymore. So the next best thing would be Information Technology (IT). The IT syllabus/specification has lesser theory than CS but involves more practical activity. In fact 50% of the exam is computer-based. This is the closest subject that students who cannot undertake CS have to offer. The current Edexcel IT syllabus introduces a set of skills that cover web design and databases, and students who intented continuing their study in web development will certainly benefit from these areas as well.

Is this for you?

If you are looking at a career in software engineering or any other tech-related stream, and you do not have the option of Computer Science, IT is the next best option. It gives you a good foundation in understanding the core concepts such as IT applications, the systems development process, web design and scripting, databases and project management.

The IT Syllabus being offered is the Pearson Edexcel WIT11 syllabus. There is another syllabus that is taught on a one-on-one basis but that is the Cambridge IT 9626 syllabus. The content is very similar but the break down of modules is not.

You may find IT useful in order to further your study in IT and CS programs after A Levels.
